IMPACT OF THE BUDGET ON FARMERS

This week’s Budget included a welcome extension to the existing scope of Agricultural Property Relief.  This will now include all environmental land management schemes, covering the Sustainable Farming Incentive, Countryside Stewardship (and other stewardship schemes) and Landscape Recovery, as well as the England Woodland Creation Offer and other similar schemes from 6 April 2025. There was also a welcome reduction from 8% to 6% for National Insurance contributions for the self-employed.  Less welcome was the proposal to abolish the Furnished Holiday Lettings tax regime which will remove the tax advantage for landlords who let out short-term furnished holiday properties over those who let out residential properties to longer-term tenants. This will take effect from April 2025.  More information about the budget is at Spring Budget 2024.
