This week, Defra published its survey of Farm Business Income for 2020/21. On dairy farms, average income increased by 9% to £92,500, with revenue from other cattle enterprises a key driver. On lowland grazing livestock farms, average income nearly doubled to £18,400 again driven by a rise in output from cattle and sheep enterprises. For grazing livestock farms in Less Favoured Areas the average income was £33,400, a 46% increase compared to 2019/20. This is all good news, but note the average Basic Payment Scheme across all farm types was £28,400 illustrating how crucial it is to the profitability of livestock farms.
