NEW DEFRA MINISTERS APPOINTED

Steve Reed is the new Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and Daniel Zeichner is Minister of State in DEFRA with responsibility for farming.  Both Ministers shadowed these roles when in opposition.  Two junior Ministers have also been appointed:

  • Emma Hardy, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State and MP for Kingston on Hull West and Haltemprice
  • Baroness Hayman of Ullock, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Lords

Steve Reed answered questions from journalists at the Great Yorkshire Show.  Asked about the future of support schemes he said: “We are fully committed to ELMS.  We are looking at the impact data and what to support the aspects that are working well and will make a statement in due course.”  In responses to other questions, he reiterated the Labour manifesto commitment of a “target for half of all food purchased across the public sector to be locally produced or certified to higher environmental standards” and mentioned a cross-government rural crime strategy in conjunction with the Home Office.
