Toxicity from livestock eating acorns is an increased risk this year. This year has been a bumper crop for acorns and Storm Amy this weekend is likely to cause many to fall to the ground. Acorns contain tannins which cause severe gastric upset and can lead to organ failure and potentially death. Green immature acorns are more toxic and symptoms can include loss of appetite, abdominal pain/bloating or constipation. Prevention is important so consider fencing off oak trees from livestock.
