Yorkshire Dales Projects
Business Skills Project
We have been successful in obtaining funding to help farmers improve their business skills, with help for individual farmers to produce their own whole farm plan, plus a series of meetings in different Dales. Working in partnership with Askham Bryan/Newton Rigg, Nidderdale AONB, Yorkshire Dales National Park and North Yorkshire National Park. Funding from York, North Yorkshire & East Riding Local Enterprise Council using Skills Funding Agency and European Social Fund monies. Project to run until July 2015.
The Farmer Network Prince’s Trust Scheme
A programme for young people in Cumbria or the Yorkshire Dales aged 18–30, who are passionate about setting up or developing a farming or farming–related business, but are limited by the resources or opportunities available to them. The scheme comprises a short course on the basics of business planning, support from an experienced farm business adviser and the chance to apply for a low interest loan and training grant, with ongoing support from a volunteer business mentor. Funded by the Prince’s Trust and the Prince’s Countryside Fund.
Skills Development Project
We currently have a scheme to train 12 x 16-22 year olds (7 in Cumbria, 5 in the Yorkshire Dales) to be hill farmers. We help the young people find extra work experience on at least 2 other hill farms, offer a training bursary worth £1,250 each and help them find training. The scheme also includes funding for a Farmer Network Labour Directory which will be used to promote the young farmers’ services in future. This is also available for all farmers and contractors to publicise their services. The scheme ends in December 2015. Thanks to funding from The Prince’s Countryside Fund.
